What it is
HIFEM Pelvic Floor Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology to support the strength and function of the pelvic floor muscles. It is delivered through a dedicated pelvic floor chair while the patient sits fully clothed, and is offered at Klinik Amisi as part of our pelvic pillar.
It is most commonly used to help women experiencing stress urinary incontinence — the leakage that can occur with coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise — as well as post-natal and peri- or post-menopausal pelvic floor changes. Because the treatment is delivered through clothing and does not require any internal probe, many patients find it a more comfortable and private option than they expected.
A consultation with our doctor is required before any first session. We will discuss your symptoms, medical history, any past pelvic surgery or implants, and confirm whether the treatment is appropriate for you.
How it works
The HIFEM device generates a focused electromagnetic field that passes through clothing and skin to stimulate the motor neurons of the pelvic floor. This triggers strong, controlled contractions throughout the levator ani and supporting pelvic floor musculature — contractions that are typically stronger than those achievable through voluntary Kegel exercises alone.
Each 30-minute session delivers thousands of these contractions in succession. Across a course of sessions, this repeated, intensive stimulation aims to help retrain and strengthen the pelvic floor and support neuromuscular control. Many women find Kegels difficult to perform consistently or correctly at home, and HIFEM offers a structured way to engage these muscles under clinical supervision.
What to expect
Before your treatment
Your first visit begins with a consultation. We will review your symptoms, obstetric history, any pelvic surgery, current medications and any implanted devices. Please wear comfortable clothing without metal zips or studs over the pelvic area, and empty your bladder before the session. Tell us if you have an IUD, are or might be pregnant, or have any implanted electronic device.
During the session
You sit fully clothed on the HIFEM chair. The clinician adjusts the position so the electromagnetic field is centred on the pelvic floor and gradually increases the intensity until you feel firm but tolerable contractions. The 30-minute session is conducted in a private treatment room. Many patients read, listen to something or simply rest during the session.
After your treatment
There are no specific restrictions after a session. You can return to work, exercise, intimacy and daily activities immediately. Some patients notice a feeling of mild muscle fatigue in the pelvic area for a short time afterwards, which is generally considered a normal response.
Recovery and downtime
HIFEM Pelvic Floor Therapy is generally considered a no-downtime treatment. There is no incision, sedation or recovery period required, and patients leave the session and continue their day as normal. The most commonly reported sensation afterwards is mild muscle soreness, similar to that which follows an intense workout, lasting up to a day or two. Results vary between individuals and tend to build progressively over the course of treatment rather than appearing after a single session.
Who is this for
HIFEM Pelvic Floor Therapy is typically offered to women who are experiencing pelvic floor weakness or stress urinary incontinence and who would prefer a non-surgical, non-invasive option to explore first. It is also chosen by women who simply want to support pelvic floor strength as part of intimate wellness.
You may be a candidate if you:
- Experience leakage with cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise
- Are at least 3 months post-vaginal-delivery or post-C-section and have been cleared by your doctor
- Are peri- or post-menopausal with pelvic floor changes
- Find it difficult to perform Kegel exercises correctly or consistently
- Prefer a non-surgical option for mild to moderate symptoms
- Want to support pelvic floor wellness alongside healthy lifestyle habits
Considerations and contraindications
HIFEM Pelvic Floor Therapy is not suitable during pregnancy. It is also not appropriate for patients with cardiac pacemakers, implanted defibrillators or other electronic implants, or where there is metal in or near the pelvic area. The presence of an IUD should be reviewed individually with our doctor. Other situations requiring caution include recent pelvic surgery, severe pelvic organ prolapse, active pelvic infection, malignancy, fever, bleeding disorders and pulmonary insufficiency. Wait at least 3 months after vaginal delivery or C-section, and ensure you have been cleared by your obstetrician. Our doctor will review your full history and confirm whether the treatment is right for you.
