Women's Intimate Health
Vaginal dryness: understand the causes, know your options.
Quick Answer
Vaginal dryness happens when the tissue in the intimate area loses moisture and elasticity, usually because of shifting oestrogen levels after childbirth, during perimenopause or from your mid-40s onward. It affects more than half of women after menopause, and it can be managed with the right care and treatment.

Why It Happens
Common causes, from a medical point of view.
Skin and tissue in the intimate area depend heavily on oestrogen to stay moist, thick and elastic. When oestrogen shifts, the skin shifts with it.
- Recurring dryness, tightness, itching or stinging
- Discomfort during intimacy
- Intimate skin looking darker or uneven in tone
- A change you noticed since childbirth, breastfeeding or approaching menopause
01 · Perimenopause & menopause
Oestrogen drops, skin thins
Through your 40s and 50s, falling oestrogen makes intimate tissue thinner, drier and more easily irritated. Changes in skin tone are also common during this phase.
02 · After childbirth & breastfeeding
Hormone shifts after delivery
Confinement and breastfeeding lower oestrogen temporarily. Many mothers notice the intimate area feels drier and more sensitive during this period, even while still fairly young.
03 · Care that doesn't suit the area
Harsh soaps and over-washing
Scented soap, douching and excessive washing can disrupt the natural pH and protective barrier of intimate skin, leading to prolonged dryness and itching.
04 · Medication and skin conditions
Other factors worth a doctor's review
Certain medications, skin conditions like eczema or lichen sclerosus, and some treatments can also cause dryness. This is exactly why a consultation matters.
When to see a doctor for a check-up first
If there's unusual discharge, bleeding outside your cycle, a sore that won't heal or severe pain, come see a doctor straight away. Our doctor will make sure everything is safe before any aesthetic treatment is considered.
Try This First
What you can try on your own first.
Not every case needs treatment. For mild dryness, small changes to your daily care can sometimes be enough.
Change how you wash
Warm water alone is enough for the intimate area, or a fragrance-free, pH-balanced cleanser. Skip scented soap, antiseptic wash and douching, all of which strip away the skin's natural protective barrier.
Support moisture
A fragrance-free vaginal moisturiser used regularly, and a water-based lubricant during intimacy, both help. Both are sold at pharmacies and are safe for everyday use.
Choose breathable fabric
Cotton underwear, and avoid tight clothing for long stretches. Skin that isn't rubbing constantly and trapping moisture recovers from irritation faster.
Look after yourself from within
Enough water and a balanced diet support skin overall. If you smoke, cutting down also helps circulation and tissue health.
When self-care isn't enough
- You've tried consistently for 4 to 8 weeks, but the dryness and itching keep coming back
- It's started affecting your sleep, confidence or intimacy
- Symptoms are getting worse, not better
If any of these sound like you, it's a sign to get a doctor's assessment. Not an emergency, just a reasonable next step.
